Today, we joined a plantation drive at Telihati village in Jagatballavpur, Howrah, organized by the Facebook community Gachher Katha, where nearly 80 saplings were planted.

Many of you may already know that for the past several years I have been actively associated with Gachher Katha, participating in tree plantation initiatives across Kolkata and its surrounding regions. This event marked the first Van Mahotsav (Forest Festival) of the year 2024, held on approximately an acre of enclosed land to ensure the long-term survival of the saplings.

🌳 Tree Species Planted

A diverse mix of native, fruit-bearing, ornamental, and shade-giving trees was planted, including:

  • Mahogany – A majestic timber tree that provides shade and supports biodiversity.
  • Mango – A beloved fruit tree that offers nourishment and shade.
  • Jamun (Indian Blackberry) – A native fruit tree with medicinal properties.
  • Guava – A hardy fruit tree rich in vitamin C.
  • Bael – A sacred tree with immense health benefits.
  • Kanchan – An ornamental tree with beautiful yellow flowers.
  • Tecoma – A vibrant flowering tree that attracts pollinators.
  • Neem – A powerhouse of medicinal and environmental benefits.
  • Sonajhuri – A fast-growing tree that improves soil fertility.
  • Ashphal (Monkey Jack) – A native tree with edible fruits.
  • Box Almond – An evergreen tree ideal for hedges and shade.
  • Indian Gooseberry (Amla) – A superfood rich in Vitamin C.
  • Gulmohar – A stunning ornamental tree with fiery red flowers.
  • Curry Leaf – An aromatic tree essential for Indian cuisine.
  • Pomelo – A large citrus fruit tree native to Southeast Asia.
