Every monsoon, the Facebook community Gachher Katha, in collaboration with the Forest Department, conducts large-scale plantation drives across West Bengal. Last year alone, the group planted more than 1,600 trees at various locations.

Nearly 100 saplings were planted, including:

  • Jarul (Queen’s Crape Myrtle) A beautiful flowering tree known for its clusters of purple-pink blossoms. It adds colour to the landscape, especially during summer and the monsoon.
  • Amaltas (Golden Shower Tree) Famous for its long, drooping clusters of bright yellow flowers, Amaltas brings a vibrant golden touch to the surroundings.
  • Arjun (Arjun Tree) A large, evergreen tree with a broad canopy and distinctive bark. It is commonly found near rivers and other water bodies.
  • Mahogany (Mahogany Tree) A tall tree valued for its strong, durable timber and dense green canopy, making it useful for shade and plantation drives.
  • Deodar (Himalayan Cedar) A majestic conifer native to the western Himalayas, recognised by its graceful branches and evergreen, needle-like leaves.
  • Indian Gooseberry (Amla) A small to medium-sized tree that produces round, greenish-yellow fruits rich in vitamin C and widely used in traditional Indian practices.

This year's plantation included species such as Jarul, Amaltas, Arjun, Mahogany, Deodar, Indian Gooseberry (Amla), and several others. The students eagerly took part in planting the saplings and have also accepted the responsibility of caring for them in the years ahead.

Environmental conservation becomes truly meaningful when the next generation embraces it with enthusiasm. We hope these young caretakers will inspire many others, allowing the mission of creating a greener future to spread even further.
