PLANTATION DRIVE AT THE PETRAPOLE BORDER
Tree Plantation Drive at the Land Ports Authority of India
Yesterday, we participated in a tree plantation drive at the Petrapole Border through a joint initiative of the Facebook community Gachher Katha and the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI). For the past several years I have been actively associated with Gachher Katha, participating in tree plantation initiatives across Kolkata and its surrounding regions.
Nearly 100 saplings were planted, including :
- Ashoka – A graceful evergreen tree admired for its dense foliage and clusters of fragrant, colourful flowers.
- Hijol – A water-loving tree commonly found near wetlands and riverbanks, known for its spreading branches and ability to thrive in waterlogged soils.
- Deodar – A majestic evergreen conifer with graceful, drooping branches, valued for its beauty and ability to thrive in cool mountainous regions.
- Kanchan (Orchid Tree) – A beautiful flowering tree known for its large, delicate blossoms that resemble orchids and brighten the landscape.
- Bakul (Spanish Cherry) – An evergreen tree with glossy leaves and small, fragrant flowers that release a sweet, pleasant aroma.
- Bael (Wood Apple) – A hardy fruit tree known for its aromatic fruit and traditional importance, well adapted to warm and dry conditions.
I would like to sincerely thank all the members of Gachher Katha, especially the dedicated admin panel, for tirelessly organizing plantation drives across West Bengal throughout the monsoon season for the past three years. Their commitment has inspired countless people to contribute to environmental conservation.
Those of us who enjoy gardening and nurturing plants in our own homes also have the opportunity to participate in a much larger celebration of nature through initiatives like these. Working together to restore green spaces is both fulfilling and deeply rewarding.
A few additional words about these plantation drives—almost all of the saplings used are purchased from local nurseries. Anyone who wishes to support this noble cause can contribute by donating saplings or by providing financial assistance. Before making a contribution, you are encouraged to follow the Gachher Katha Facebook group, learn about its activities and ongoing projects, and then connect with the admin team if you would like to help.
If you know of any vacant or enclosed land that would be suitable for tree plantation, you are welcome to get in touch with the team. Every protected patch of land has the potential to become a thriving green space.
