Birds, landscapes and high-altitude adventures across the spectacular Trans-Himalaya
Ladakh is often imagined as a land of stark mountains, endless blue skies and dramatic landscapes. But beyond its iconic scenery lies a fascinating world of high-altitude wildlife and birdlife waiting to be discovered. Our Ladakh Birding & Photography Tour brought together a group of enthusiastic birders and photographers for an exploration of this remarkable Trans-Himalayan landscape.
Arriving in Ladakh was only the beginning. The team spent the first two days in Leh, giving everyone time to adjust to the high altitude and unfamiliar mountain environment. The first day was kept relaxed, focusing on rest, hydration and acclimatization.
On the second day, the team eased into the adventure with birdwatching around Leh, along with some relaxed sightseeing. With the first sightings already setting the mood and everyone better adjusted to the altitude, the team was ready to venture into Ladakh’s higher valleys and begin the main expedition.
Once acclimatized, the real adventure began. The route carried us through Khardung La, Agham, Wari La, Chang La, Pangong Tso, Chushul, Hanle and Tso Kar, with birding and photography opportunities along the way.
Every landscape brought something different — rocky mountain slopes, river valleys, wetlands, remote villages and vast open plateaus. The roads themselves became part of the experience, with frequent stops to scan the landscape for birds and wildlife.
Over the course of our three-day journey through Leh and Ladakh, we encountered a total of 75 bird species, making the trip a rewarding experience for every birding enthusiast.

Despite the seemingly barren landscape, Ladakh supports an extraordinary variety of high-altitude birds. Across wetlands, rivers, villages, mountain slopes and open plateaus, our team encountered a fascinating selection of resident and migratory species.
Birding was at the heart of the journey, but Ladakh’s vast landscapes offered plenty of other encounters along the way. From the open valleys to the remote mountain roads, glimpses of wildlife added unexpected moments to our days in the high Himalayas.
Some encounters were fleeting, others gave us a chance to pause and observe — but each added another memory to the journey.
Ladakh is a land of dramatic contrasts — towering mountains, vast valleys, winding roads and open stretches of rugged terrain that seem to change with every turn. From the quiet villages to the expansive landscapes around Pangong, every part of the journey offered a new perspective.
Beyond the birding and wildlife, these landscapes became an important part of the experience — moments to pause, take in the vastness around us and simply enjoy the beauty of the Trans-Himalaya.
When the mountains fell silent and darkness settled across Ladakh, another side of the journey began to reveal itself. Far from city lights, the night sky appeared vast, clear and filled with stars.
Our time in Tso Kar also gave us the opportunity to experience Ladakh after sunset, with cameras pointed towards the incredible Himalayan sky. The darkness, stillness and endless stars created some of the most atmospheric moments of the journey.
For a while, the birding and the roads could wait — it was time to simply look up.
